When reviewing the progress of our scholarship program for the half year, I noticed something that cannot make me sit comfortably. In some region in China,  about 80% of students applying for help are girls.

Now, take a moment to read the letter from one of the students we sponsored and imagine her daily life. A sponsorship of 500RMB is hardly enough to cover tuition, study materials, and medication cost for her mom who is diagnosed of cancer.  Like any other students, she has to deal with high pressure  at school for high school entrance exam and live with bare minimum living standard. What’s more, she has to stand strong to take care of her mom and see her suffer in pain.  I believe in her that she will grow up to be a strong girl. On another hand my heart sank at the thought that it is not uncommon that girls in such family have to take a bigger share, if not all, of the house work, be the first ones to give up study for work, and receive least attention.

We all know that when we support the growth of girls, we raise the quality of life for everyone and more than one generation. With better education, they will lead family and community; they will provide better care for their children, focus on future education and health care; they will help to improve our society future.

There is something we could do … probably not much but at least,  if it might light up a girl’s day and put a tiny smile on her face, it worth all the effort.
